TDI (Turbo Direct Injection) Diesel
"Turbo direct injection"
refers to the way a turbo diesel engine injects fuel into the
combustion chamber, where it is ignited by compressed (heated) air. The
TDI engine offers significant improvements over other diesel engines.
The injection is electronically controlled, which reduces the "lag"
of older diesel models, reduces the emission of nitrogen oxides,
reduces noise, and improves fuel efficiency. The combustion chamber of
a TDI engine involves less heat loss and allows a lower compression
ratio, thus increasing engine durability and reducing noise. The limited availability of TDI cars in
California is due to emission standards. Tailpipe emissions from diesel
engines and the fuel sulfur content of conventional petroleum-based
diesel fuel have led to "LEV" (low emission vehicle) standards that preclude the sale of new diesel passenger vehicles in California. However, "out-of-state"
vehicles with at least 7500 miles may be brought in for re-sale. Ahl
